Delay in land acquisition stalls city airport's ambitious growth plans

Coimbatore: A delegation of city-based industrialists had met civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju a few days ago reiterating their demand for flight connectivity from Coimbatore to Dubai. But the city airport's transition to the league of big airports with connectivity to multiple international destinations seems to have hit a road block with airport's land acquisition moving at a snail's space.
It has recently come to light that the land acquisition process for the airport expansion has got stuck, because one of the 23 blocks is yet to be notified in the government gazette. "A block of land, along with the relevant survey numbers, has to be published in the government gazette as being marked for acquisition by the government along with the name of the project," said a senior officer in the district administration.
"However, of the 23 blocks marked for acquisition, block number seven, which consists of 11.22 acres of the 627.89 acres required, is yet to be published in the gazette. Once it is done, we will call the land owners there for price fixation talks," he said.
Private land owners own almost 461.90 acres of the 627.89 acres earmarked for expansion. 134.33 acres are owned by the defence department and the rest is poromboke land owned by the government. The collectorate began price fixation talks with land owners around November last year, however, they could not reach a conclusion.
