New terminal to replace T2; IGI to get 4th runway

New Delhi: IGI Airport is all set for a major expansion with the old international terminal (T2) going to make way for a brand-new T4 that would be built right across T3 and which could be its mirror image.
Aviation secretary R N Choubey told TOI on Tuesday that DIAL's plan to construct T4, a fourth runway and expand T1 had been cleared. "In all, IGI Airport would get about 1.2 lakh square metres of additional area under the master plan," he said.
A senior Aviation ministry official said the plan had been cleared and DIAL should share the details. But DIAL refused to give any details despite repeated attempts.
As of now, T1, which is used by low-cost carriers, is bursting at the seams with hardly any space for flyers to sit in peak hours or additional flight slots for the airlines. Choubey, who made DIAL improve things at 1D last year, didn't want a repeat of a Mumbai-like situation in Delhi and wanted DIAL to begin expansion work at the earliest.
