Pay the dues, or hand over Nagpur airport: AAI tells MIL

In a stern warning, Airport Authority of India (AAI) has asked MIHAN India Limited (MIL) to pay dues running into crores of rupees by August 31 this year or hand over the airport to the former. MIL runs Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport at Nagpur.
Reduction in number of flights, degradation of services, issues pertaining to employees have been haunting MIL for quite some time. Mounting loss has added to its woes. During his tenure as Senior Airport Director, Vinod Kumar Yadav had admitted that MIL was running into losses.
An official of MIL told ‘The Hitavada’ on the condition of anonymity, “It is true that AAI has warned us. The amount in question is around Rs 62 crore. We have paid the amount of Rs 30 crore spent by AAI on recarpeting of runway.” As far as the issue of paying salary to AAI employees is concerned, the official said, employees refused to accept the payment though MIL had offered it to them.
The official said that MIL was facing losses and number of flights also had been reduced. “But,” he said, “picture is not as being projected. AAI alone cannot take the decision of tranferring the airport. It requires a lot of things including Ministry’s approval, Cabinet Decision etc.”
