Mumbai University associates with BFC to start Aviation course

Mumbai: According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, The University of Mumbai has signed an MoU with the Bombay Flying Club (BFC) in the view to start a degree course for aviation studies. The agreement was signed between Sanjay Deshmukh, Vice Chancellor, Mumbai University and Mihir Bhagvati, President, BFC on Friday.

The Bombay Flying Club is the first flying club in the country and legendary aviator J R D Tata and his sister Rodabhai were its students. The University's three year BSc course in aviation is expected to start in 2016-17. The lessons will be conducted by the BFC faculty members. The university is acquiring a four-seater Cessna 172, which costs around INR 1.5 crores. This would be placed both at Juhu and Dhule where the BFC has a leased airport.

"There will be a total of 30 seats out of which 15 are already booked," said Bhagvati. The university has not only been planning to buy an aircraft since 2009, but also to start its own aviation course at Ratnagiri airport. But the plan failed due to denied access for extension of the runway by the owners of Ratnagiri airport and Coast Guard. The fee for this course is INR 1.15 lakh per annum. Each student will have to complete 200 hours of flying for the commercial pilot license and they will be charged separately," said Bhagvati.
