Chambers gear up for July 20 meet on Calicut airport

Kozhikode: The two chambers of commerce in the city that have been campaigning for land acquisition for the expansion of Calicut International Airport in Malappuram district see a positive step forward in Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan convening a meeting on the expansion in Thiruvananthapuram on July 20.

They, however, feel that the impasse can be broken only if a firm decision is taken to acquire the 375 acres required to expand the runway – very central to the entire expansion process, including the operation of large aircraft.

Both trade bodies are looking to underscore this at the meeting, which has been postponed from July 15 to July 20, owing to pressing reasons.

The announcement of a meeting on this long-pending issue shows that the Chief Minister is keen on taking the process forward, Malabar Chamber of Commerce president C. Mohan said on Thursday.

It is being held in just two months since the new government took over, and that indicates the seriousness with which it approaches the airport issue, honorary secretary of Calicut Chamber of Commerce Abdulla Maliyekal said.

The District Collectors of Kozhikode and Malappuram, Director of the airport, MPs and MLAs of both districts, and the presidents of both chambers of commerce have been invited to the meeting.

“When he was here for an interaction after taking charge as Chief Minister, Mr. Vijayan had promised the government’s intervention in the expansion of the airport,” Mr. Mohan said.
