Mopa airport gets GSPCB consent

Panaji: The Goa State Pollution Control Board has decided to grant consent to set up greenfield international airport at Mopa in Pernem taluka.
The decision was taken under the Air and Water Acts at a special meeting chaired by Chief Secretary and chairman of Goa State Pollution Control Board R K Srivastava on Wednesday at secretariat.
An official source from the GSPCB said the members perused the details of the water requirement, waste water generation, proposed mode of treatment and reuse, air emissions and control measures, solid and hazardous waste generation and decided to grant consent to establish the greenfield airport with condition that the successful bidder will have to approach the board in the event of any changes in the treatment methodologies and generation of waste water and solid and hazardous waste.
The department of civil aviation has submitted an application for consent to build the airport at Mopa in Varconda, and also covering Ugvem, Chande, Casarvarnem and Ambrem in an area of 81,29,455 sq.mts, for passenger capacity of 9 million per annum.
The project received an environmental clearance from the ministry of environment and forest in October 2015. The work on the Mopa airport project has been proposed to start from November 2016 and expected to be completed in four phases.
The first phase is expected to be completed by 2019 while the whole project has been scheduled to be completed by 2025.
