NSG makes reconnaissance of airport in Tiruchi

Tiruchi: Even as a round-the-clock vigil is in place at the international airport here, a team from National Security Guard (NSG) carried out a reconnaissance to ascertain the facilities and the security-related measures.

Headed by a senior level officer, the team spent three days recently at the airport as part of their mission interacting with top officials of the airport. Guarded by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, the airport which witnesses more overseas flight operations than domestic service has been classified as a “sensitive” airport.

The team carried out their task from June 28 to June 30. The State police provide security cover in the city side. Sources told ‘The Hindu’ that the NSG team carried out the exercise to act swiftly in case of a contingency. The NSG personnel had an interaction with officers of the CISF which is the first to respond in case of any crisis situation at the airport. Personnel of the NSG, who are deployed during extreme crisis situation, carry out such exercise once in two years. The team had inspected the airport in 2014 when period a full-fledged Security Directorate was created for preparation of security programmes as per ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) guidelines.
