Chennai: Chennai: There are people who arrive and leave for their destinations at Chennai airport - and then there are those who use it for the wi-fi connection, as a 'lovers park'. This shocking revelation by a passenger and police sources puts a question on the security arrangements outside the airport.
"The other day, I saw a policeman questioning two youngsters sitting in the corridor of the airport. They did not have air tickets nor were they there to see someone off. They later sheepishly admitted that they were updating their phone as there was free wi-fi at the airport for half-an-hour," said Kathiresan, a passenger.
Confirming the lack of restriction on people at the airport, a police source said there are so many people coming everyday to the airport to travel or receive or send-off someone, it is hard to keep tabs.
But there are also people who treat this as a leisure area. "There are many instances where I have had to warn lovers sitting here for long hours, spending time together like it was a park," he said.
While the spotlight is on the modernisation and development of Chennai airport, very little focus has been given to its security. True, there are checks done before one enters the gate of the terminals; but the outer areas, on the city side, including parking, elevated corridor and the passenger drop-off points, remain vulnerable.
"Even when hotels use scanners to check cars that enter their premises, why can't it be done at the airport? Except for the booths set up to collect parking fee, I don't see anything else restricting the entry of vehicles inside the airport which clearly shows a lapse in security," said Rajendran, a taxi driver.
