Punjab blames Centre for 3 non-functional airports

Chandigarh: Holding the Centre responsible for non-functioning of the state's three airports, the Punjab government has claimed that despite constant communication and follow-ups, no commitment from the Union government was forthcoming on starting flights from Bathinda, Sahnewala in Ludhiana and Pathankot aerodromes.
The SAD-led government submitted a formal statement in this regard before the Punjab and Haryana high court on Monday in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking directions to start flights from these three airports. As per the written statements submitted by Punjab's civil aviation director, Pathankot airport was meant to facilitate the travellers' visits to the region and was expected to boost tourism in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The state government expressed ignorance about the reasons as to why the Union government and the Airport Authority of India (AAI) were not starting flights from the Pathankot airport.
Regarding the Sahnewal airport in Ludhiana, it was submitted that airport was established in 1962 and was handed over to AAI in 1982 for domestic flights' operations. Old airlines carriers like Vayudoot, Indian Airlines, Kingfisher and Deccan Air used to operate from this airport from 1982 to 1993 and thereafter from 2010 to 2011. After that, scheduled flights operations came to halt.
