Coimbatore: The authorities of Coimbatore International Airport are in a fix as the Director General of Civil Aviations (DGCA) has issued an ultimatum to provide 150 metres of unobstructed space on both sides of the runway.
The ultimatum, issued last month, comes at a time when the airport is gearing up for renewal of its operations licence in April 2017. For the airport to have 150 m space on either side of the runaway, the authorites will need to acquire 70 acres of land.
Officials are hopeful they may get through the licencing procedure and would obtain an extension of deadline for acquiring the land but insisted that the additional space on the sides of runway was a basic safety requirement.
The DGCA communication however carries with it the probability of cancelling the operations licence which if happens, the airport will have to close down functioning in April next year. "This rule mandating 150 m of space on either ide of the runway was brought in the year 2009-10 by the DGCA for all airports to ensure flights land safely even during adverse conditions. In the case of airports having multiple runways their farthest runways should have this space," Coimbatore airport director, G Prakash Reddy told TOI.
