SpiceJet staff aided smuggling operation, says DRI sleuths

Mangaluru: Investigations by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) into the seizure of 22 gold biscuits weighing 2566.050 grams on board a SpiceJet aircraft on Friday has revealed complicity between the airline staff and smugglers.
Acting on specific intelligence that attempt was being made to smuggle gold bars of foreign origin by concealing them under the seat of the aircraft, DRI sleuths combed the concerned aircraft on its arrival at the Mangalore International Airport (MIA).
Vinayak Bhat, deputy director, DRI, in a press communique on Saturday stated after thorough examination of the aircraft, sleuths were able to retrieve gold biscuits of the above mentioned weight, valued at Rs 75,26,225. The sleuths arrested two employees of the airline working at MIA who were a part of the conspiracy in this connection, Vinayak said, adding that the duo were helping the smugglers in retrieving the gold biscuits from the aircraft after it landed here.
As the sleuths unravelled the conspiracy, they found out that the gold biscuits sourced from Dubai were concealed in the said Spice Jet aircraft during its international run from Dubai to Mumbai by a carrier hired for the job. Once the aircraft was deployed in the domestic sector, it operated between Mumbai and MIA. It was here that those arrested were found passing on advance information to the smugglers regarding aircraft itinerary, the deputy director said.
