After nod for EIA, Aranmula on the boil

Pathanamthitta: The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) granting Terms of Reference (ToR) to KGS Aranmula International Airport Limited for conducting yet another environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the proposed Aranmula airport has drawn widespread public protests.

Talking to The Hindu here on Wednesday, socio-political leaders, who actively participated in the mass movement against the controversial project that required conversion of a vast expanse of the Aranmula puncha (paddy field), expressed shock and dismay over the Centre’s decision that allegedly favoured the private company.

Poet and environmentalist Sugathakumari, the chairman of the Aranmula Joint Action Council, said the people of Aranmula would reject the MoEFCC decision with contempt and anguish.

“It is sad that the Union Ministry failed to understand the spirit of the National Green Tribunal verdict that out rightly rejected the proposal to set up an airport after converting the wetland and paddy land at Aranmula. The Supreme Court too had upheld the NGT verdict two years ago,” she said. She said Bharatiya Janata Party State president Kummanam Rajasekharan, Suresh Gopi, MP, and O.Rajagopal, MLA, should convince the Centre about the disastrous implications of its latest order.
