Army Aviation pilot gets gallantry award for Siachen rescue operation

Dehradun: Lt Col Sanjay Tekchandani, one the two pilots from the Army Aviation Corps involved in the rescue operations at Siachen during which Lance Naik Hanumanthappa along with 5 other soldiers was found buried under 25 feet of snow, who in an exclusive conversation with TOI had spoken about the rescue operation which was carried out from Feb 3- Feb 9 was awarded the Sena Medal on Independence Day in recognition of his efforts for the same operation.
This is the first gallantry award for Tekchandani in his 19 years of defence service who is an alumnus of St. Joseph's Academy in Dehradun, following which he joined National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune and was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1997. Flying for Army Aviation Corps since the year 2000, Tekchandani evacuated Hanumanthappa who was stuck under an avalanche at Sonam post on Siachen glacier. Recalling the experience, Tekchandani said,"it was extremely bad weather condition with continuous snowfall and zero visibility but somehow the entire rescue team managed to get Hanumanthappa out alive. We took special permission to take off early next morning to so as to get him to the base camp at the earliest. Although we ran into bad weather again, we managed to get Hanumanthappa back with us but unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries."
