Coimbatore airport: report to be submitted

Coimbatore International Airport officials will send a detailed report next week to the Civil Aviation Secretary on the immediate requirements to upgrade and expand the airport here.

Airport Director G. Prakash Reddy told The Hindu that with the delay in acquiring over 600 acres for expansion of the airport here, the civil and survey teams on Tuesday started surveying and earmarking land that has to be immediately acquired.

Mr. Reddy said they would initially require land for the construction of the new terminal building and associated works and, land required for the runway extension could be acquired in the second phase.

An Airport Authority of India official said that portions of land to be acquired for the immediate requirements too are under dispute.
The official expressed the need for speedy and proper solution to resolve the problems faced in acquiring the required land.
A team of office-bearers from the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, met the Civil Aviation secretary recently in New Delhi and pointed out that Coimbatore airport has only conditional licence, which is renewed once in six months.
