Committee to study land acquisition for Karipur airport

Malappuram: The government will appoint a technical advisory committee to offer expert opinion for land acquisition in connection with the development of Calicut International Airport at Karipur.

Minister for Local Self-Government K.T. Jaleel told a meeting here on Tuesday that expert advice would be sought before beginning the second phase of land acquisition for the airport.

The committee would study the feasibility of filling 150 ft depth for runway extension and other environmental issues. Mr. Jaleel said the committee would also study whether the land demanded by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) was actually needed.

The government had set aside Rs.14,063 crore for land acquisition and rehabilitation of the displaced. Acquiring the land of 100 people who signed consent would begin soon. The compensation would be handed over at the time of registration, the Minister said.

The 100-acre land meant to rehabilitate those who surrender their land would be developed into a township with basic amenities. Mr. Jaleel urged the people to give top priority to Karipur and support its development with a long vision.
