Chennai: The search to find the remains of the missing AN-32 Indian Air Force aircraft in the Bay of Bengal may be further delayed as Sagar Nidhi, the ocean research vessel belonging to the city-based National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), will take at least five more days to reach Indian waters due to rough ocean weather conditions.
The vessel is now likely to arrive on August 7 or 8. A team of NIOT scientists held a meeting with Indian Coast Guard officials on Tuesday to discuss the way forward.
Satheesh C Shenoi, director of INCOIS and NIOT, said Sagar Nidhi may be diverted directly to the search location in the Bay of Bengal instead of its initial planned arrival at Tuticorin port. The vessel, which has a multi-beam echo sounder with a sub-bottom profiler to map the seabed, was initially supposed to arrive on July 31. But rough waves in the Indian Ocean delayed its arrival to August 3, which is now further delayed.
The search for debris on the surface of the ocean with ships and aircraft of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard has not made much headway owing to the lack of an underwater locator beacon on the aircraft.
