A civil defence centre in the Indian state of Kerala has paid tribute to the Dubai airport firefighter who died after battling the fire on board the Emirates flight that burst into flames on Wednesday.
Jassim Isa Al Balushi has become renowned in India in recent days for tackling the blaze on Flight EK521, state news agency WAM reported.
The Boeing 777 had an emergency landing at Dubai International Airport on Wednesday at around 12.45pm. It had taken off from Trivandrum International Airport in Kerala that morning.
WAM reported that Al Balushi’s “heroic act and sacrifice” is being honoured by fire crews in Kerala.
The Civil Defence Centre in Thrissur City, the cultural capital of Kerala, posted a huge photo of Al Balushi on the facade of the building. More than 220 of the 300 rescued from EK521 were Indian nationals.
WAM added: “Al Balushi’s photo has also gone viral on social media platforms and he has become a popular hero in several Indian cities.”
