Talks between Swedish Defence firm-SAAB and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) seem to have rough into a rough weather over a possible collaboration for Tejas MK 1A, India’s indigenously developed fighter aircraft.
“There is no collaboration envisaged with any European Aircraft Manufacturer for development of Tejas Mark 1A,” Defence minister clarified in the Parliament on August 12. Significantly, SAAB’s India head and chairman Jan Widerström had recently stated that the company was talking to HAL to develop the Tejas MK1A.
The swedish major had even offered to set up a production line in India under ‘Make in India’ scheme and to supply the latest Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar to HAL for Tejas MK1A. However, the proposal seems to have failed to lure Parikkar.
The Tejas MK1A is a 4.5 generation aircraft, developed by HAL for the Indian Air Force, and which the government says, will not lead to the development of indigenous fifth generation aircraft.
