Ramp enroute airport in a rut

Thiruvananthapuram: State government’s decision to not allow demolition of the ramp connecting Trivandrum International Airport(TIA) and NH bypass has put the National Highways Authority of India(NHAI) in a fix. This may affect the widening of the stretch between Chakkai and Enchakkal.

In the last meeting, which was chaired by the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the government decided not to allow the demolition of the ramp. The Chief Minister also directed the NHAI to widen the road by retaining the ramp after conducting a detailed study.

The ramp was constructed during the previous V S Achuthanandan-led LDF government without taking into consideration the NHAI directions. According to NHAI officials, the ramp was built without discussing with them and also has been constructed unscientifically. This forced NHAI to skip work on this side in order to meet 24-month deadline for the road development.

“We are rushing ahead with the road widening works to meet our deadline. In fact, we are running out of time. So far, no decision has been taken yet. The latest decision by the government to retain the ramp will further delay the works. Hence, we took a decision   to skip this part of the stretch and it will be widened once the deadlock over this will be cleared,” said top NHAI official.
