Bhubaneswar: Come Thursday, flights landing at the Biju Patnaik International Airport here after 10.30pm will be allowed to do so by the air traffic control following a nod from the Airports Authority of India for 24-hour operation.
The state airport authorities had sought permission for round-the-clock operations in view of several flights from neighbouring airports asking for diversion during inclement weather and emergency situations.
The 24x7 operation will also help the airport attract more flights.
"All the units and personnel like ATC, communication, terminal building and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will be prepared for night operation from Thursday. Earlier, we were closing the operation after 10.30pm," said airport director R Mahalingam.
For the 24-hour services, the airport has augmented its staff strength in CISF, communication cell, ATC and firefighting squad. "We have fire tenders to meet the requirement during night landing and takeoff. The fire tenders can cater to all Air Bus categories of planes," said the airport director.
