Relief for Korean woman caught with deer antlers at Bengaluru international airport

Bengaluru: The high court on Thursday quashed the FIR and subsequent proceedings initiated against South Korean Miekyung Koak for possessing a deer's antlers.
Justice Anand Byrareddy, who noted that the magistrate did not apply his mind before taking cognizance of the offence, also directed police to release her passport.
Koak, 61, who had come to India on a spouse visa, was arrested on April 13, 2015 and sent to jail by security personnel at Kempegowda International Airport, claiming that she was carrying the horn of a chital (spotted deer or Axis Axis). Her husband is doing Ph.D at the Martin Luther King University in Shillong, Meghalaya.
Besides seizing her passport, police had registered a case under sections 49, 40, 44, 49(B), 49(C) and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Though she was released on bail, the magistrate at Devanahalli rejected her application seeking discharge from the case. Koak claimed her husband got the antlers from Ooty during a morning walk.
