2,250 cartons of smuggled Chinese cigarettes found in AI warehouse

The Air Intelligence Unit of Mumbai Airport Customs has recovered 2,250 cartons of cigarettes worth Rs 22 lakh from a misdeclared consignment at the domestic airport over the weekend. The Chinese cigarettes called Win were illegally smuggled into India from Dimapur.

Commissioner of Customs (Mumbai airport) Rama Mathew said, “Officers of AIU examined two consignments of cigarettes consisting of 1,500 cartons which arrived on October 6 and another 750 cartons on October 8. A raid conducted at the Air India warehouse located near the domestic airport terminal led to the discovery.”

A businessman, Sunil Subrammanian has been arrested. In his statement recorded under section 108 of the Customs Act, 1962, admitted to selling and dealing in the said goods.
