Mumbai: InterGlobe Aviation, parent of India’s biggest carrier IndiGo, is just about a decade old in the industry. Having commenced operations with a single aircraft in August 2006, Rakesh Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia’s airline – in a short span of time, thanks to some astute moves at the start – now dominates the Indian skies, with almost 40% market share.
The jury spent considerable time discussing the initial shortlist, looking for a company that had made a bigger impact on its industry.
The jury therefore went outside the initial shortlist to look at a wider list of candidates and picked InterGlobe Aviation as the winner. In the jury’s unanimous view, InterGlobe made a big difference to the airline business. Anand Mahindra recused himself for this category as Tech Mahindra was also in contention.
IndiGo is one of the most efficient low-cost carriers in the world. Just a decade old, the airline boasts of an order book of 422 aircraft, more than all its peers put together. That gives it visibility on expansion and an opportunity to gain market share further. “We are absolutely thrilled to get this news!
