In a major change, India will make a renewed attempt to change the registration codes of civilian aircraft that begin with the initials VT (Viceroy Territory). The code is stamped on the side of all India-registered planes and has been in practice since 1929.
The practice was retained by India after Independence, even though countries like Nepal, Pakistan and Fiji opted for a revision. Taking a fresh look at the matter, the government is now examining it, reported Hindustan Times.
According to sources in the aviation ministry, many felt that it was odd to continue the VT code legacy. While an industry expert maintained that VT brings the British Raj to mind and why should India retain it when even other countries have moved past their colonial era.
A similar move was attempted a few years ago but back then no code signifying India was suggested. Another source added that codes like IN for India, BH for Bharat or HI for Hindustan could be used, but they have already been used in the past.
