India sets up ATC towers upgradation committee for UAVs

In a move aimed at facilitating the civilian use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in Indian airspace, the government has constituted a committee to ascertain the air traffic control (ATC) towers requirements for infrastructural and technical upgradation.
This comes in the backdrop of government’s attempt to evolve a UAV policy, wherein the payload may be restricted to 25kg and the UAV may have to fly within the ‘visual range’ also referred to as the ‘visual line-of-sight’.
“The committee will have representations from the ministry of civil aviation, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI),” said a senior civil aviation ministry official requesting anonymity.
There is a need to modernise at least 40 ATC towers as the country witnessed 25 near-miss incidents in the past one year involving commercial aircraft.
Drones can be effectively deployed by e-commerce delivery firms and also for monitoring purposes by the Indian Railways and energy firms. Currently, UAV is used by security agencies and public sector units such as Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd for laying high tension cable lines.
