Land acquisition from January, villagers to protest on Thursday

Pune: The district administration will start the process of land acquisition for the new Pune airport in Purandar from January 2017.
Speaking to TOI on Monday, collector Saurabh Rao said the ground survey of the land, which spans over 2,400 acres, will begin soon and other formalities will be initiated later.
"The actual process, when it comes to acquiring land, is expected to start by January. The ground survey needs to be completed first, after which the reports and results will be closely analyzed. Once the analysis is complete, the area will be notified. The whole process is expected to take some months. However, in the meantime, the administration will discuss the matter with the locals regularly. The compensation package design also needs to be finalized based on the plots and the survey reports," the official said.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had formally announced the new Pune international airport at the Purandar taluka, located around 45km southeast of the city, on October 7.
He had said the new airport, which will take three years to come up, shall be named after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje, as Purandar is his birthplace.
The project is being opposed by farmers and landowners who have made it clear that they will not let go of their lands for the airport.
