Work on airport to begin soon as final instalment for buying land released

Bareilly: Work on the much awaited civilian airport project here is expected to begin soon as the final instalment of around Rs 8 crore (Rs 7,78,43,500) was released for the purchase of land earmarked for the civil enclave. A fund of Rs 60 crore (Rs 60,88,73,832) was sanctioned for purchasing of land required for the purpose and out of which Rs 53 crore (Rs 53,10,30,000) was released and spent on buying the land for the project.
The project has been in the pipeline for more than 10 years now. Initially, farmers whose lands were to be acquired for the project were unwilling to sell them at the price offered by the government. However, after negotiations, 83 farmers agreed to sell their plots at twice the circle rate.
Earlier, AAI had said the airport has to be spread over 10 hectares and this was later increased to 14.4 hectares. Of the total 14.4 hectares required, 13.4 hectares were private property and the remaining area come under the gram sabha.
Speaking with TOI, district magistrate Pankaj Yadav said, "The final instalment of Rs 7 crore was released and will be used in clearing dues of land purchases made for the project."
Following the state government's approval, in March 2015, to purchase land from farmers, a registry of land belonging to farmers was made in April this year. Earlier, the administration had spent Rs 54 crore, sanctioned by the state government, to acquire land from local farmers for the airport project. Another proposal of Rs 3 crore would be mooted to make this additional purchase.
