Boxed in, citizens near airport seek out-of-the-box solution

Mumbai: Citizens fated to reside near the airport are concerned that the new city plan is likely to box them up in two-storey structures, allowing them no room to grow taller even as the slums around them and the airport itself have been authorised to rise vertically. They have now joined hands to reverse such a plan by seeking an out-ofthe-box solution.
A civic forum called Citizens from Mumbai Airport Runway Funnel Zone has drawn the attention of Chief Minister Devendra Dadnavis to the plight of around 20 lakh residents of Khar, Santacruz, Vile Parle, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Ghatkopar and Kurla, who have to abide by the height restrictions in Development Control Rules 2034, which bar from using the floor-space index (FSI) granted to them for redevelopment.
Group members believe the constraint would turn their apartment buildings, currently two stories high, into graveyards.

“We would like to meet you face to face along with the citizen delegation so that we can present the facts and figures for your kind consideration so that you can help us with pragmatic solution,” the group said in a blog, ensuring that their message reaches the chief minister.
