What the Air India's collection is all about

The Maharaja’s art collection, as the art pieces painstakingly collected by the national carrier over the last 60 years is called, is an eclectic and somewhat patchy assortment of five different sets of artefacts. These collections range from contemporary art, antique objects, specimens of traditional Indian handlooms, apparel, and also jewellery, 19th Century photographs, and clocks. Former civil aviation minister Ajit Singh once famously put the collection’s value at Rs 350 crore.
In June last year, this newspaper was the first to report on the Air India’s plan to create a museum to showcase its collection (‘Maharaja’s art treasures now open to public’, MM, June 4, 2015). The collection includes works by MF Husain, Tyeb Mehta, SH Raza, KH Ara, and other contemporary masters.
On Tuesday, an Air India spokesperson said that work on setting up the museum was on track and that it should be opened to public sometime in 2017. “This relocation of precious collectibles to the first floor ensured it remained safe during Tuesday’s fire. Some of the smaller artefacts on the 22nd floor were recently moved by our staff,” JB Singh, fire officer at the Air India building, said.
