Airport achieves milestone, handles 1.2L passengers

Madurai: In a significant development and what can be construed as a major boost for the Madurai International Airport in the future, the airport has announced that it has handled more than one lakh passengers in April for the first time ever. The Madurai airport stood fourth after Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy when it came to handling passengers. But, the April numbers took it past Trichy by a margin of 3,000 passengers. Not to be outdone, enthusiasts in the city took to social media and proudly flaunted the achievement of the airport.
Madurai airport director V V Rao said the reason behind the increase in numbers was due to the operation of more domestic flights. The number of passengers handled by the airport in April, 2017 was a whopping 1,20,554 with an overall load factor of 86%, which is percentage of filled seats.
Whereas, Trichy airport handed only 1.17 lakh passengers in the same month. For Madurai airport, it is a steep increase, since only 83,570 passengers were handled in April last year.
