Delays in airport infrastructure worry stakeholders

Madurai: At a time when Madurai airport is getting busier by the day, it is mired with delays in implementing facilities. The international cargo facility is yet to become operational, despite the airport notified as customs airport several years ago.
With things falling in place in the later part of 2016, officials had assured that the cargo facility will become operational by April 2017. Even after two months have passed after the deadline, it is yet to see the light of day.
Also, the land acquisition to the tune of 615 acres for runaway expansion work which was proposed back in 2008, is progressing at a snail's pace. The runway is planned be expanded to 12,500 feet from the present 7,500, which will enable landing of bigger flights.
Industrial bodies in Madurai say that the infrastructure facilities available at present may not be enough to handle the increasing number of passengers. President of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce, N Jagatheesan said, "The present terminal can handle only 250 outbound and 250 inbound passengers at a time. At a time when Trichy and even Tuticorin airports are going for terminal building expansion, Madurai is lagging behind," he said.
