Coimbatore: With airlines flying newer routes, adding more flights and offering cheaper fares, passenger traffic in the Coimbatore International Airport is growing by a sizeable 24.4%. Domestic air traffic has grown by a fourth (24.4%), while international passenger traffic has grown by a marginal 6.6%.
Airport authorities say the growth in passenger traffic is not surprising. "Airports across the country have registered a growth rate of around 25%," said director of the Coimbatore International Airport R Mahalingam. "For example, Biju Patnaik International Airport has grown by 27%, Bagdogra Airport's traffic has grown by 30% and Vishakhapatnam Airport has seen its traffic grow by 60%," he said. "So the numbers are along the national average with a scope to grow a lot more," he added.
Some of the reasons for the increase in traffic are addition of flights and routes by a few airlines and tickets at economic prices. "It was a little after mid-2016 that Coimbatore-based Air Carnival launched its flights to and from Chennai. In the eight months that they operated their flights (till March-end), they contributed partly to the increase," said an airport manager. "National airlines like Indigo also introduced a few additional flights - three flights to Hyderabad and Jet Airways and Air India have introduced flights to Bangalore," said Mahalingam.
