Mount Zion society to build airstrip

Pathanamthitta: The Mount Zion Educational and Charitable Society will construct an airstrip at Aranmula in the next six months, society chairman Abraham Kalamannil has said.

He told the media here on Monday that the Kerala High Court stayed an order of the Kozhencherry Taluk Land Board (TLB) declaring 393 acres in possession of the society as excess land. He said he had moved the High Court against the TLB order.

He said the society had 232 acres at Aranmula which was sold to the Chennai-based KGS Group for ₹6 crore for constructing an international airport. The land deal with the KGS Group was a wrong decision, he said, adding that he would not support the Aranmula airport project any more. He said the Director of Civil Aviation had given permission for setting up an airstrip at Aranmula as part of the aeronautical engineering course at the society’s engineering college at Kadammanitta. He said the society had approached the Civil Aviation Department for reviving the proposal.

He said only a 1,500-ft long runway was required for the airstrip, adding that an air taxi service could be started, which could be a promising air travel facility in the region.
