New cargo facility at airport

Chennai: A new cargo facility was launched at the Chennai airport recentlu. The facility was inaugurated by Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra, who said that the airport, which handled Rs. 186 crore worth of cargo last year — a growth of 27% from the previous year — was set for a major boost in this regard.

The facility has been built at a cost of Rs. 3 crore and is spread over 1,500 sq. m.

The airport currently handles about 90,000 tonnes of cargo and will have three more such terminals next year.

A new exit for passengers arriving from abroad was also inaugurated. This will help reduce the congestion at the arrival hall of the international terminal and ensure more space for passengers, officials said.

Besides, 10 e-toilets were also opened at the airport near the parking area for the benefit of visitors, officials said.
