Rs 20.33 lakh worth gold seized at Chennai International airport

Chennai: Customs officials on Saturday seized 698gm gold worth Rs 20.33 lakh from a man who landed at Chennai International Airport from Dubai.The gold was concealed in a laptop adapter, customs officials said.
The passenger, Syed Haroon Basha, was travelling on the Indigo airlines flight 6E 066 which landed at Chennai airport around 5am. He passed through the customs green channel and was walking towards the exit of the arrival hall when he was apprehended by officials of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU). The officials became suspicious that he might be carrying concealed contraband.
When his baggage was checked, the gold was found in the form of 12 cut bits. He was been arrested and further investigation were underway, officials said.
Gold is mainly brought in from UAE and countries like Malaysia and Singapore as Chennai is well connected by air to these places.
In recent times, majority of the seizures have been made from passengers coming from Singapore and Malaysia.Two employees of airport contractor companies have also been found to be aiding smugglers take out gold by evading customs check. Recently, a carrier tried to bring in gold dissolved in aqua regia, a mixture of acids.
