Court directs FIR against airport parking operator

Mumbai: The Andheri metropolitan magistrate has held that the parking lot contractor at the international airport has no jurisdiction to charge "entry fees" from motorists entering the airport area.
Additional chief metropolitan magistrate D L Nikam has directed the Sahar police to register an FIR under Section 156 of the Criminal Procedure Code after Harold Buthello, a private transporter ferrying Air India staffers to airport, approached the court.
In his complaint, Buthello has alleged that the airport parking lot contractor, Mahesh Sunny Enterprises Pvt Ltd, has in a span of two years allegedly extorted Rs 2 crore as entry charges from him even though the firm doesn't even have any rights to collect the levy.
The court also pulled up the Sahar police for saying it was unable to proceed with the inquiry after terming the row as a civil dispute. The court directed the Sahar police to allot the investigation to another officer. Buthello had signed a contract with Air India for transportation of its staff from various locations to the airport. Mahesh Sunny Enterprises is a licensed operator that has been appointed by the airport to operate parking lots.
