Ahmedabad: In what could speed up development of greenfield airport for Rajkot, Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEF) has accorded environmental clearance (EC) to the new airport project. The foundation stone of the airport at Hirasar village was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 7. The airport is expected to become operational by 2021.
The Rs 1,405 crore international airport project was granted green nod on October 10. The expert appraisal committee (EAC) under the ministry had recommended the proposal for EC in its meeting in September.
"As per recommendations of the EAC, the ministry of environment, forest and climate change hereby accords environmental clearance to the project — New Greenfield Airport at Rajkot, Gujarat, promoted by Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Company Ltd," the ministry said in a notification dated October 10. The proposed Rajkot airport near Hirasar village, 30 km from Rajkot city, is expected to become operational in the next five years. It may be mentioned here that the Union ministry of civil aviation in July 2017 had granted approval and 'site clearance' for the new airport that will be spread over 2,500 acres.
