Gold worth Rs 33 lakh seized at airport

Panaji: The commissionerate of customs on Wednesday foiled a passenger's attempt to smuggle gold worth Rs 33 lakh. Acting on suspicion, customs officials of the air intelligence wing detained the passenger, who arrived on an Oman Air flight, at the Dabolim airport.
During a search of the passenger's luggage, 1.24kg gold was found concealed in the metal frame of a stroller bag, a customs official said.

The passenger, who has not been identified, arrived on Oman Air flight WY-209, which landed at the naval controlled airport early Wednesday. He had boarded the plane at Jeddah, a customs official said. The flight has a stopover at Muscat before proceeding to Goa.
A customs sleuth said the passenger was found to be carrying five "high density" gold pieces, which have been attached under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
A department spokesman said the passenger was unable to provide a suitable explanation and that further investigations were on to see if he was part of a larger gold smuggling nexus.
