Status upgrade for Salem airport

Salem: The decision of the Ministry of Civil Aviation to change the status of Salem Airport to “served airport” from the present “underserved” and “unserved” status has brightened the possibility of introduction of flight service under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) soon. Salem airport, which has remained defunct for the past few years, is among the 22 airports in the country, whose status has been changed to “served airport” under the RCS. Salem airport is the only airport in Tamil Nadu to get the status changed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The inclusion of the Salem airport under the RCS was made possible following the state government’s acceptance to share 20 % of the viable gap funds and provide basic amenities such as police, fire brigade, and the required power and water supply at concessional rate.

K. Mariappan, president, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Salem, thanked the Ministry for coming out with an announcement on the change in the status of Salem airport, which he said has only confirmed the possibility of introduction of flight service under Udan scheme soon.
