KOCHI: The Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) on Friday opened the visitor's area at the departures of the new international terminal, T3, providing passengers and those accompanying them an area to relax and spend their time.
Cial spokesperson said that the opening was delayed due to security requirements of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).
"Earlier, the rule was that the master concessionaire would have to take the security clearance. But BCAS requires the management of every single company to take the security clearance. Furthermore, every staff member would also have to be given security training," he added.
In the new space, which is like a mini-mall facility, visitors will have access to a full-fledged food court as well as other retail outlets.
The visitor's area was inaugurated by V J Kurian, managing director, Cial. The security at this new 56,000 sq ft area will be monitored by CISF. Until now, people accompanying passenger to the international terminal would not be allowed into the new terminal. Now, if they produce a valid identification and pay Rs 10, they can see off a passenger from a distance, all up to the immigration.
