Air India asked to pay up; consumer forum orders compensation for 'defficiency in service'

Bengaluru: Holding Air India Ltd guilty of deficiency in service, the III additional Bangalore Urban District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered it to reimburse Rs 29,062 to Maharaj Krishan Punjabi (62) of Kavalbysandra here.

This is regarding Krishan and his wife's travel in 2015. The couple had booked an Air India flight on July 9, 2015 from Bengaluru to Delhi and Delhi to Jammu. For their return, they booked Spice Jet from Jammu to Delhi and Delhi to Bengaluru. They paid a total of Rs 26,179 for the round trip. They were to leave on December 22, 2015.

The couple alleged that Air India made poor arrangements for boarding passengers. Those whose flight had to leave after two hours were blocking the way for Krishan and his wife. Even though they had reached on time, they couldn't board the flight because of this reason.

By the time they reached the counter, they were refused boarding passes for being late. Their request for alternative arrangements in any other flight was also denied. So, they had to cancel the return flight ticket too.

The couple then had to book different flights with other airlines. The total expenditure incurred by them was Rs 29,062, including Rs 2,000 as taxi charge.

Air India Ltd said Krishan reached airport at 4.50 am and was in the queue at 4.55 am. From 4.50 am till 5.10 am, Air India has checked in as many as 40 passengers on the flight in which Krishan was booked to travel.
