Chennai airport bid to reduce departure delays

Chennai: Chennai airport has started trying out simultaneous aircraft operations from its main and secondary runways.

The trials will be on for three months before considering permanent implementation , says a press release from Chennai airport.

During a 55-minute trial between 1028 hrs and 1123 hrs eight departures from secondary runway; and five departures and nine arrivals on main runway were managed. Through simultaneous operations, the airport can handle the 42 aircraft movements per hour as against 36 earlier, said Chennai Airport Director G Chandramouli.

During trials, delay for departures was minimised and conflicts in airspace reduced and track miles of aircraft decreaseddue to allocation of runways based on the type and route.
