Cow strays on Ahmedabad airport, PETA asks Gujarat to go vegan

Four days after a freak incident on Ahmedabad airport, in which a cow strayed into the operations area last week, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sent a letter to the Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, urging him to tackle the stray cattle crisis at its source by encouraging vegan eating and businesses in state.

A stray cow had entered the operations area of the Ahmedabad airport in the wee hours of Thursday. Two flights had to abort landing and diverted to Mumbai after the pilots of a cargo plane and a flight from Abu Dhabi spotted a cow running amok on the runway.

CISF, airport officials and fire department officials chased out the stray bovine after sustained efforts lasting over 90 minutes.

PETA Director Poorva Joshipura however pointed out the larger issue of stray animals.

“It's well known that stray cattle in Gujarat cause traffic accidents and even deaths, but their situation, of being forced to try to survive on the roads, is not their fault – the dairy industry and those who consume its products are to blame,” she said.

The incident had created considerable havoc on the airport and raised serious doubts over the security arrangement of Ahmedabad airport. Sources at the airport claimed the bovine had jumped over the wall while another set of sources claimed it was triggered by a human error and not a major security issue.
