New terminal: 444 people to be affected

Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 444 people are to be affected while acquiring land from Vayyamoola for constructing the new domestic terminal of the Thiruvananthapuram international airport.

As per the draft report of the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) study carried out for the government from October last by the Loyola College of Social Sciences and made public on Monday, 73 families will be displaced and another 32 families will lose their land.
The SIA draft report was prepared after visiting the households and after talking to people who own land at Vayyamoola, next to Terminal II of the airport, and taking inputs from the Airports Authority of India. Sabu P. Thomas of the Loyola college said land acquisition was needed to cater to the needs of flyers, as there was a 30% hike in traffic. It was difficult for the 105 families to further part with their land, as many were victims of displacement, ill treatment from authorities, loss of livelihood, and institutional proximity, he said.

As per the findings, those to be affected were grouped into three categories. Ten times the fair value as compensation for those surrendering land, compensation based on built-in area, quality of the structures and houses, compensation for trees, accommodation till resettlement and jobs based on qualification for displaced, among other things, were suggested.
