'Relocating seven airports for Purandar airport not a joke'

Defence ministry’s goahead for an international airport at Purandar has gotten locals contemplating to move the court. They have continued with the protest even as the main clearance is in place and now heading towards the land acquisition part.

The new airport was proposed by the government as the land of Lohegaon facility is small and belongs to the air force. Purandar airport will be built on 2,367 hectares of seven taluka villages. It will be called Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje International Airport given that it is being built on Sambhaji’s birth land. The project has received approvals from Airports Authority of India and defence’s “conditional clearance”. With them being fulfilled, it has now received a no-objection certificate. The built-up is now facing a final hurdle — land acquisition.

Member of Parliament and head of airport advisory committee, Anil Shirole, confirmed the development. “Defence’s no-objection certificate was the main concern. Now, that we have received it, the process will speed up. With all the permissions in place, the land acquisition will begin,” he said.

Suresh Kakani, vice-chairman and managing director of Maharashtra Airport Development Company Ltd, said that work pace will pick up with permissions in place. “We have already commissioned the techno-economic feasibility study and appointed a consultant for the same. We have for a report at the earliest,” he said.

The rapid process has concerned farmers who believe they will be landless after handing over their parcels to the government. Their agitations have time and again revolved around the concern, only to be pacified by the government and district administration, who revised compensation packages. However, the relief was short-lived as the agitations continued in one for another. Once they came to know of the noobjection certificate, they decided to meet in order to discuss action and move to the court.
