Travel plans take off despite Republic Day curbs over Delhi airspace

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force's announcement on closing the Delhi airspace between January 18 and January 26 may have disrupted the plans of some travellers, but bookings for the first long weekend of the year look promising for both domestic and short-haul international destinations.

"In line with the recent holiday trend of short-haul vacations, Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan and Andaman are gaining popularity due to favourable weather conditions. Shorthaul and easy visa international locales such as Singapore, Thailand, Bali, Maldives and Mauritius are seeing an upswing, too. Dubai, the perennial favourite, has also seen an increased interest among travellers because of the Dubai Shopping Festival 2018," said Shravan Gupta, executive director, leisure businesses, FCM Travel Solutions India.

Online travel portal Kayak has witnessed a 60% year-on-year jump in bookings for the Republic Day weekend this year.

"Our data and analysis clearly indicate that Indian holidaymakers are keen to make the most of their first long weekend of 2018, as we have seen a significant 60% increase in travel searches for the upcoming Republic Day weekend. According to Kayak's data, international travel is on the rise - even for short weekend breaks... Dubai, Bangkok, Singapore, Bali and the Maldives are the most popular international getaways for the coming long weekend," said Abhijit Mishra, regional manager, India and Middle East, Kayak.

Sharat Dhall, COO, B2C at Yatra.com, said the company is definitely seeing a surge in bookings. "People are considering flying out in the second half of 25 January and are taking advantage of the long weekend. We are seeing increasing traction for both domestic and international routes like Bangkok, Dubai, Goa and Kerala."
