Madurai: The Customs department officials detained a French couple at Madurai Airport for attempting to board a Sri Lankan Airlines Aircraft to Colombo with a Vinayaka Idol on Monday evening.
Police sources said here on Tuesday that the Vinayaka idol is suspected to be an antique in nature and hence the Customs officials could not permit the foreign Nationals to carry the idol out of the country. Only after obtaining the mandatory clearance from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), whether it was an antique or non-antique idol in nature, they could be allowed to take the idol, the sources added.
The idol weighing 4.6 kg and around one foot tall was purchased by the French couple from an art gallery at Kochi on January 30. The couple produced a bill for Rs 32,340 towards the purchase of idol. The idol was handed over to the CB-CID Idol Wing Police for further investigation.
