Kamaraj terminal to be razed soon

Chennai: The process to begin demolition of the three-decade-old Kamaraj Domestic Terminal at Chennai airport has started, to make way for the phase II modernisation project. It will take three months to complete this process.

Officials said, as a first stage, various equipment and fittings inside this terminal have been dismantled. The work was on for nearly a week now and then the building will be pulled down systematically.

“We have started making arrangements to put up barricades around this building so that passengers, staff or other passersby are not injured. We are careful and taking steps to ensure there are no safety issues,” an official said.

Soon, after this is complete, the Anna International Terminal too will be razed. This terminal has not been used for five years now after the operations were shifted to the new domestic terminal.

As part of the phase II modernisation project, the Kamaraj Domestic Terminal and Anna International Terminal will be built as the international terminal and the existing new domestic and international terminals will be converted into the domestic terminal on either side. It will take another three years to finish the modernisation project.
