Gold worth Rs 20 lakh seized at Bhubaneswar airport

Bhubaneswar: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here on Monday again detained a passenger of the Air India’s Bangkok flight who was carrying around 700 grams of gold worth Rs 20 lakh.

This was the sixth seizure of the precious yellow metal within a month at the city airport. The Customs officials found that the man had concealed the gold in a mixer grinder.

When the passenger arrived from Bangkok, his suspicious behaviour alerted the Customs sleuths, following which they detained him. On frisking his body and scanning his baggage, the sleuths detected the gold kept in the mixer grinder, sources said.

Notably, on March 27 and 28, gold weighing 1.2 kg and 378 grams had been seized by Customs officials from some passengers of international flights from Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
