Almost a decade-and-a-half after flight services between Bengaluru and Vidyanagar (Ballari) were initiated, it has finally caught the fancy of passengers, especially tourists, to travel by air instead of the four-hour-long drive by road.
TruJet, which started flight operations on the Bengaluru-Vidyanagar route starting March 1, has been attracting passengers as in the first month alone, 2,820 commuters travelled between the two destinations.
According to Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) city pair wise domestic traffic statistics during March, 1,326 passengers travelled from Bengaluru to Vidyanagar and 1,494 passengers boarded the flight from Vidyanagar.
The Bengaluru-Vidyanagar route was started under the Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme and this one-hour-long flight was launched to attract tourists visiting historical sites like Hampi, which is located in Ballari district. The state tourism department had been for long trying to connect Ballari district by air from Bengaluru to enable tourists to visit Hampi in a hassle-free manner.
